Good news/bad news - MCFC
Taken from The Guardian
Manchester City have drawn up a
shortlist of some of the biggest stars in world football, headed by
Thierry Henry, as they look for a "box-office signing" to fill the role
they had hoped to create for Ronaldinho.
The club are determined
to investigate whether Henry would be tempted to leave Barcelona in the
January transfer window if he has a difficult first half of the season
in La Liga. At the same time, feelers are being put out across the
world to bring in the "superstar" that City's executive chairman, Garry
Cook, believes will take the club to another level.
Cook has not
been put off by City's long and ultimately unsuccessful pursuit of
Ronaldinho, when the Brazil international led them to believe he was
keen on moving to Eastlands before signing for Milan.
Since
then, City have been placed in a period of financial uncertainty as a
result of their owner Thaksin Shinawatra's financial and legal issues
in Thailand, where he has £800m of assets frozen by the courts.
However, Thaksin has been talking to various investors about putting
money into the club and remains convinced that he will eventually get
some, if not all, of his money back from Thailand.
Whether City
can tempt a player of Henry's ilk remains to be seen, but Cook has made
it his priority once the current transfer window is out of the way.
The
manager, Mark Hughes, it has become apparent, will not have the
ultimate say on which players join, a position he appears to have
accepted. However, he is understood to have instigated the transfer of
Vincent Kompany from Hamburg yesterday. A fee has been agreed and
Kompany, a 22-year-old Belgium defender, will become Hughes's third
signing.
Bit of an odd one this.
I'm hoping that Hughes lack of say concerns the 'box office signing' only otherwise we're basically relying on agents to offer us goods or for our backroom non football staff to be scouting for new players.
Also why is Cook waiting for the window to close to try to capture Henry, wouldnt it make more sense to try to get him now as opposed to Xmas or even next summer? I'm assuming Utd etc want Henry to sign now too not in 4/5/6/12 months time.
This obsession with a 'big name player' is a little embarrassing to be honest, clearly just a way for us to shift more shirts in Asia as I genuinely believe that once the novelty of a Ronaldinho/Henry playing for us has worn (5 games max - 2/3/ months) off the attendances at COMS would be the same with or without the new boy.
The article claims Cook believes that this 'superstar' will take us to the next level, now, realistically how many players in the world are good enough to single handedly drag a club up? I'd guess there's 11 tops!
Anyway, that's all the news brought to you by a bright and bleary eyed Quinninho.

City playing well = Lots more people coming to watch. Easy as.

Unfortunately that didn't work last season.
I guess we'd want to "court" a player like Henry, as we did with Ronaldinho or any other player we have to "punch above our weight to capture" for that matter. We have to make us become an attractive outfit to join.
I don't read newspapers, i've already seen the amount of bile they spit out simply to sell copies; they aren't there to inform anymore, they've become a form of entertainment and completly nullify their purpose.
All the hysterics of the past few weeks have already been put to bed simply because we've signed someone. It makes no sense at all, there's obviously no smoke without fire but the way rumours spiral out of control is absolutely absurd.
Right i'm off to upgrade to an iPhone, if they actuaclly have the 8gb version is stock

Re: Good news/bad news - MCFC
to be fair, there's no saying a high-profile bums on seat signing wouldn't be any good.
think Denis Bergkamp - Arsenal.
Maradona - Napoli
Look what they did for their clubs.
I know it's the exception to the rule but, let's have a little faith and see what happens, could be worse, we could be after Dean Windass on loan

Re: Good news/bad news - MCFC
Why?
We could have our own "big names" in Micah, Harty and Boj.
As bozo says if Leslie is doing the business the bums on seats will fill the ground every home game.
