Messi: I'm staying at Barca

Post by madsmcfc on March 6th 2009, 02:14

BARCELONA ace Lionel Messi has reiterated his desire to remain at the Nou Camp for the rest of his career amid increasing speculation about a move to Manchester City.

Following up on their ill-fated pursuit of Kaka, City have been linked with an audacious attempt to land Messi and reports suggest that the Premier League side are preparing a 100million bid for the Argentina international.

But Messi, who started out in Barca's youth team nine years ago, insists he has no wish to leave the Catalan giants.

"If it were up to me, I would stay at Barcelona until I finish my career," he told Portuguese newspaper Publico. "I will stay as long as they want me and no club can persuade me to do the opposite."

Messi, who is close to notching 30 goals for the campaign in all competitions, is enjoying arguably his best season and if he continues in this vein he could finally lift the FIFA World Player of the Year award after finishing as runner-up the past two years.

However, the 21-year-old claims that is not at the forefront of his thoughts.

"I never think about personal recognition," he said. "For me, it is more important to think about Barca, to win titles.

"It would be good, but I'm not obsessed about it. I only want to be fit, do my job in the best possible way.

"I am lucky, I live by my passion and there are a lot of people who work, doing what they don't like and are badly paid for that.

"Every day I feel thankful for the luck that I have and for the opportunity to play with the the team-mates I have at Barca and in the international side."

Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo were neck and neck for much of running for the FIFA accolade but the Manchester United player edged it after firing his side to the Champions League and Premier League titles, while Barca ended the season empty-handed yet again.

"Of course it doesn't bother me at all that I didn't win (the player of the year award) this year," he added. "I've always said he was a brilliant player.

"His instincts are out of this world. Until you see him on the pitch, you don't realise what a physical presence he has.

"It is good to be recognised but it will depend on the titles Barca wins. Cristiano won the Champions League and the English league last season and that's why he deserved to be recognised."

Not really sure I'd be that bothered Mads. IMO, we're not at the stage of buying megastars. Look at the signings Hughes has brought in so far. Nigel, Bellamy, VK, Zab, Shay, Bridge. None of them could be seriously mentioned in the same breath as someone like Messi, but they have been bloody good signings. Alright, Bridge has been iffy so far, but he will come good. We need to establish ourselves as a top 6/ top 4 team first. THEN, maybe we can think about the superstars.

I think we have a good squad already. I look at teams like Villa and Liverpool and I can't think of many I would take from either of them. Only Barry and Agbonhalor from Villa, and then they would only be squad players. Gerrard and Torres and maybe the Argie from red scouse.
We have a good squad and on our day are a match for anyone. Consistency and confidence are our only problems.

Yep, I agree Jim. Can hardly see him leaving Barca anyway, let alone to come to City at the moment.

He is a great player, best in the world in my opinion at the moment. It's good to see all these great players being linked with City - even if there's not a cat in hell's chance that it's gonna happen. Cool

Ooops, mentioned cats! No preference, honestly! Wink Laughing

Club statement 06/03/2009 08:00

Following an article in The Sun newspaper which claimed that Manchester City are preparing a 100m bid for Lionel Messi, the Club would like to make the following information clear.
The story is untrue and this fact has been accepted by the newspaper in question. General comments about Lionel Messi, made by Dr Sulaiman Al Fahim, who holds no position at the Club, were mistakenly linked to Manchester City.

The article was printed in error and an apology to His Highness Sheikh Mansour, Chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak and Dr Sulaiman Al Fahim and a correction in Saturday's edition of the newspaper will follow.

It's about time we started suing these papers for the crap they print about us. Fingers

This headline really makes me laugh. How dare we even think about quality players eh! Even if the story isn't true. W*nkers.

Manchester City are back in the news for all the WRONG REASONS:

Haha, exactly. I'd not even heard these "rumours" until the press came out and annouced them.

If wanting the best player in the world is bad then i'm not sure what these journo's really think football is all about!?

Why do they all support utd even though they were brought up in East Ham? It's not because they play with dignity and second rate players.
