Expanding COMS
Manchester City are ready to boost the capacity of Eastlands to 65,000.
The News of the World says the project to make Eastlands the second biggest ground in the Premier League could be completed by the 2011-12 season. The stadium currently holds just under 48,000. Old Trafford seats 76,000.
A source said: “There have been rumours floating around the construction industry for a few months that City are looking at how to expand the ground.
“The owners are looking into it but there are a few obstacles to get through before they can get any work started.”
How would they do this? Third tier all the way round?

I have to say, I'm not sure of the merits of the idea. Let's face it, we're not selling out as it is. And whereas 40000 in a 48000 capacity stadium doesn't look too bad, in a 65000 capacity stadium, they'll look very sparse.

Re: Expanding COMS
apparently the there is to be work on the ground but it's to be on the hospitality suites and such like, instead of expanding the capacity.

I totally agree with you.

Re: Expanding COMS
That photoshopping is amazing... imagine a 65,000 capacity shaking the foundations with a rendition of Bluemoon! Chills.
We need enough to satisfy supply of our 48,000 seats first though!

Maybe. However, surely our owners are expecting Champions League football in the next few years. If we aspire to being successful, and around the top of the table in the coming years, maybe 48,000 isn't gonna be big enough? Taking into account all the 'glory hunters' we may attract!
If they do go ahead and expand, be interesting to see how they do it. That third tier will be right above my head and surely something like that at both ends will take quite a while to do? I would imagine they may have to lower the capacity while the work is done.

This story was doing the rounds a while ago. Surely we have to get the freehold on the site first before we can even consider any expansion.

ADUG are supposed to be exploring the possibility of buying the stadium and the land around it.Blue75 wrote:This story was doing the rounds a while ago. Surely we have to get the freehold on the site first before we can even consider any expansion.

Yes I know. Lets hope Manchester City Council don't start playing to much hardball over it.

Haven't they bought the old Clayton Analine(sp) site across the road ?
That's big enough for a new stadium and a new training ground.

That's the rumour isn't it. I heard that a new training ground and youth set up might be being built on that as they want to pull the plug on Platt Lane and Carrington and base it all together.

Re: Expanding COMS
What a laughing stock we would be if we expanded now..or even in the next 2/3 years. We need to be filling it all the time first.
The only way expanding would work would be if all of level 2 was corporate, a la the emirates.

I can't see us expanding anytime soon. From my understading it's a seriously difficult prospect although the footprint is in place under the two end's should we need to go ahead.

Re: Expanding COMS
once we start filling it to capacity then and only then should we look to expand the place. lets face it we arent even opening the top tiers for thursdays game, which is the last 16 of a european competition so having top tiers that go all the way round would be pointless right now. lets face it the league attendances are held up by the seasonticket holders, because i believe they have the mindset that they have paid for it so they will go , even when we are piss poor.

Re: Expanding COMS
IF they decided to a charge £10 - £20 (depending on opponents) we'd fill it. It's not as if ADUG need the money.
