New deal for Steve Harper clears Shay Given's Newcastle exit path to Manchester City

Good for the club and Joe should it happen.

With all the additions so far maybe we will have something to cheer about this season.

Agreed. Given is a class 'keeper. And it's a far more sensible buy than Buffon for how many million was it?

Not for me... Cudicini has just joined Spurs on a free... and infinately better keeper that Jow could learn a lot from.

I know he's said up for the challenge but i bet Given isn't, would he leave his nice cosy legends stauts and guarenteed starting place behind to scrap with a 21 year old international prospect? Joe hasn't warented being dropped and although Given can be very good he tends to pull off his woder saves after Newcastle have already shipped 3.

The times are claiming fat twat Ashley is trying to get more money out of us.

Looks like this deals off and i hope City come out fighting as the media is bound to portray it as a "No one wants to play for city" angle despite our 3 other signings.

Cudicini was the best keeper in the Prem before Cech came along, just because he's sat on the bench doesn't automatically mean he's lost his class.

I think Given's strengths are already the strengths that Hart naturally posseses and are such traits which are more naturally given as opposed to taught.

And all this talk of getting an experienced 1st choice kepper to teach Hart... Why not get a top class goalkeeping coach!?

We had him but he was sacked to allow Kevin Hitchcock to take his place.

Given bids farewell as Newcastle rage at City

By Jason Mellor
SHAY GIVEN last night severed a 12-year association with Newcastle United to launch a new chapter in his career at Manchester City.

The Republic of Ireland goalkeeper sealed a £7m (€8m) transfer — rising to £8m (€9m) depending on appearances — after passing a medical in Manchester as his former club took on Sunderland in yesterday’s Tyne-Wear derby.

“It’s exciting times at Manchester City with the new owners and this manager [Mark Hughes],” Given said.

“There are big plans for the club. I am even really excited to be going training on Monday, it’s a new chapter in my life and one I am looking forward to.

“The profile of the club has changed dramatically, and there are already some fantastic players here. It looks like some good players will come here in the future as well.”

Given retains the utmost respect of supporters of the club he is leaving and the 32-year-old was at pains to stress the difficulty of his decision.

“I have two young kids, I had just moved house in Newcastle and there were a few things that could have made me stay there,” he added. “I have a lot of friends there, and the supporters there are fantastic.

“They have been great to me for so many years, and I thank them for that. But I just felt that this was an opportunity for me to come to a club that in my opinion are really going to be going places.

“There is already the nucleus of a very good team here and I hope I can add to that. I am just delighted that they have chosen me to strengthen their goalkeeping department as well.”

Hughes added: “I have said for a long time that we need the experience of a keeper like Shay. I have had a good talk with him about where we expect to be in the future.”

Given and Hughes’ generous words were not echoed by Joe Kinnear. The Newcastle manager aimed a parting shot at City, who took their transfer window spending towards the £50m (€56m) mark with their latest acquisition.

Kinnear was unhappy about the length of time it took for the transfer to go through. Speaking after Newcastle’s 1-1 draw against Sunderland but before Given’s move was finalised he revealed: “Up until kick-off we hadn’t heard anything from Manchester City which I’m a bit disappointed with.

“I thought the deal would have been done by now but they’re dragging their feet and it’s not helping my situation because I’ve other players I want to bring in.’’

Kinnear's accusation was perhaps more a case of aiming his frustrations at who he sees as the guilty party in Newcastle losing one of their prized assets.

The Dubliner will, however, no doubt concede in private it is Newcastle's constant and regular ability to implode that is the main underlying factor behind Given's desire to move on after making more than 460 appearances.

Despite turning down what Kinnear claimed to be the offer of a lucrative new six-year contract, Given will face little animosity from Newcastle supporters, who fully appreciate the decision to move on is not a knee-jerk one.

Interesting quotes from Shay.

Maybe some biggies coming in the summer?

Post by stony February 2nd 2009, 17:24

Makes me f***ing sick looking at a picture of him in a man city shirt money grabbing little

Couldn't give a s*** I hope man city win f*** all and the owners get bored of there play toy. Chelsea have all the money in the world as well and they can't put a desent run together at the moment. Mark Hughs is a crap manager anyway, always a s*** excuse for why they play bad, like JFK really.

Any team in the top 4 or everton, even Villa I would have had the upmost respect for him, but I don't like what man city are doing I think its a discrase to football so I can't respect that at all. Full stop.

On top of all of this Englands best prospect for a keeper has just been f***** in the arse, in my opinion they don't even need Given they need defenders so cheers for stealing him City and giving up on another good up and coming keeper. Hopefully Joe will leave and go to another premiership club to get regular football.

Thanks for ten years Given  But you just lost a lot of my respect for you, I thought you were a different kind of man obviously I was mistaken.
